Stress can cause cancer

If you experience stress on a daily basis, this can be a trigger for developing cancer tumors on the long term.

This is claimed by scientists at Yale University in Nature magazine.

Until now scientists thought that tumors could only develop if several cancerous mutations took place in one cell. Now it has been shown that mutations in different cells can also develop into tumors if a connection is formed between those cells.

According to the research everyday stress can cause these connections among the cells to be more easily made.

Professor Tian Xu, the lead scientists of the research, says that not only emotional stress caused by work or family could cause cancer, but also by physical stress caused by bodily trauma.

Moderate alcohol drinker is happier

People who drink alcohol every now and then are more happy than people who do not drink any alcohol at all. This are some of the first results of the long running research of the Erasmus University into happiness.

On average participants in this study scored a 7.5 on the happiness scale in response to the question if they felt happy the last year. This is the same as the national average. Striking in this study is that participants that drink a little are happier than those who do not drink at all.

Participants that drink 2 or more glasses of alcohol one or two days a week score an 8 on average, but people who do not drink any alcohol stay at a 7.5. Participants that drink 2 or more glasses of alcohol, 3 or more days per week are more unhappy and score a 6.6.

Remarkable is that moderate drinks feel especially comfortable in situations where they try to find relaxation with friends and family compared to non alcohol drinkers.

On the long term is still needs to be shown that moderate drinkers stay more happy compared to people who don’t drink at all.

Doing sports halves chances of depression

People who do sports have 50% less chance of developing a psychiatric disorder than people who don’t. Once people have developed a psychiatric disorder, they recover quicker by doing sports.

This research was conducted by order of the Dutch Ministry of Health. One of the recommendations is that the government should subsidize sports programs for groups that are vulnerable for developing psychiatric problems. We are talking about depression, anxiety disorders, phobia and alcohol addiction for example.

The study was started in 1996. In the period of 1996-1999 7000 randomly selected adults were followed. The same group was studied again now.

The positive effects of sports is best seen in patients that have anxiety disorders according to the researchers. People with a newly developed psychiatric disorder had a 1,5 times higher recovery rate within 3 years when doing sports compared to patients who did not do any sports.

One to three hours of sports per week is already enough to attain this positive effect, say the researchers.
