Watching television can lead to lack of sleep

Many people watch tv at night and stay up too late because of it. This way they don’t get the recommended amount of sleep. Research among more than 21.000 Americans showed this.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine saw that people often stay up too long, even though they had to get up early in the morning. Because of this 40 percent of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. And this can lead to health problems like obesity.

The participants filled in a questionnaire about they spend the hours before bedtime. This showed that almost 50 percent of the time before going to bed was filled with watching television.

The researchers were surprised that people who watch television let the tv decide when they go to sleep and not the setting of the sun of their internal biological clock. The researchers also think that not watching tv before going to sleep can increase the amount of sleep.
