Elderly people who eat fatty fish regularly have better hearing than their peers who do not. Fatty fish contain omega-3 fatty acids which turn out to be beneficial for keeping certain brain functions, like hearing.
This is the conclusion of foodscientist Carla Dullemijer at the University of Wageningen. That fatty fish are good for your brains is something that has been assumed for a longer time already.
Young pigs, which are known to be smart animals, use omega 3 fatty acids to stimulate the development of their brains. Dullemijer assumes that these fatty acids also help to aging human brain to stay in a good working condition longer.
She tested a group of elderly people who did not consume a lot of fish oil and compared their cognitive achievements with a group op people that did eat a lot of fatty fish. Fatty acids from fish in the blood showed a definitive increase in achievements.
After that Dullemeijer investigated that inner ear, that has a lot of blood flowing through it. Elderly who consumed a lot of fish oil had a better blood circulation and that causes the hearing to work better, especially with lower tones.
Salmon, mackerel and eel among others belong to the types of fatty fish. Fish oil can also be bought in capsules.
