Brush teeth daily to prevent heart disease

Brushing your teeth and gums every day reduces your chance of heart disease. This is the result of a study that was done at the University of Milan.

Brushing your teeth regularly is necessary to prevent your mouth from turning into a haven of bacteria. These bacteria trigger the immune system. That is not a bad thing by itself, but the immune systems also combats beneficial proteins in the arteries. In the long term this leads to the accumulation of fats in the blood vessels. They constrict forming the cause of heart disease.

During this study 35 men and women between the ages of 38 and 57 were studied. They had no heart problems, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. They did have irritated and bleeding gums.

They all underwent a routine treatment to bring their gums back to a healthy state. At regular intervals the amount of bacteria in the mouth were counted. After a year it became clear that the simple treatments had a clear effect on the state of the heart and blood vessels of the test subjects. The number of bacteria had dropped dramatically, as well as the amount of C-reactive proteins that are often linked to cardiovascular disease. Also the wall of the neck artery was 20 percent less thick.
