Less cancer among vegetarians

British research among 52.700 men and women has shown that there are less instances of cancer among people who do not eat meat.

The researchers at the University of Oxford followed people in the ages of 20 to 89 for a couple of years. They were divided into three groups, namely vegetarians, fish eaters and meat eaters. This showed that people who only eat fish or are vegetarian develop less cancer in general.

Oddly enough the instances of intestinal cancer were higher among the vegetarians than among those who ate meat. This type of cancer is ofter associated with the regular consumption of red meat.

Researchers do not exclude the possibility that this result is caused by the selection of the test subjects. The people who ate meat had a very healthy lifestyle just like the vegetarians who participated in the research.

They ate meat in moderation and a lot of fruits and vegetables. This makes it hard to compare them to the average meat eater.

Because the origin of cancer lies in many other lifestyle factors besides nutrition, more research is need according to the researchers. The results of this research appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
