There are plenty of myths flying around about sugar and its effects on health. But many of them are not sufficiently proved by science. This is the conclusion of a study that has been published in the Obesity Reviews magazine.
What role does sugar play in the development of obesity, insulin resistance and tooth decay? A group of experts has investigated the current scientific knowledge on these topics.
For weight control the total energy intake, the energy density of the foods and eating habits are primarily important factors in developing obesity. It does not matter if the carbohydrates are taken in the form of sugar or as more complex carbohydrates.
Research into the role of sugar in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes does not shown any direct relation. There is convincing evidence however that weight loss and more exercise improve insulin sensitivity and protect against type 2 diabetes.
The frequency of eating and drinking has a greater effect on the burden put on teeth that the amount of sugar that is eaten. Good dental hygiene is thus more important.
