The flue virus spreads quicker from person to person in dry air. Oregon State University researchers think that air moisturizers could prevent the flue from spreading.
Not only do you get cracked lips and dry skin from the cold winter air, but it also increases the chance of contracting the flue.
For this research the presence of the flue virus was measured at different levels of air humidity.
Only about 20 percent of the virus survives an hour in a very moist climate. After 24 hours the virus is dead. In a very dry climate however, 80 percent of the virus is still very much alive after an hour. After 24 hours about 60 percent of the virus is still in the air.
Enough reason, according to the researchers, to place air moisturizers in places where the flue virus could be dangerous, like intensive care wards or even at home with a sick child. If it does not cause problems like fungus or moisture problems that is.
