Tips for keeping your heart healthy

Have a steak

Beef contains selenium which is good for your immune system. Furthermore it contains a lot of monounsaturated fats and a lot of different B vitamins. B vitamins help to lower your homocysteine levels and this is beneficial, because homocysteine makes your arteries clog up quicker. Don’t put too much butter on your steak though.

Rent a scary movie

Everything that gives your heart a temporary jolt is good for you. By placing your heart in high gear every now and then, it functions better during calm conditions. This was discovered by the scientists of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Find a live partner

People who stay single have higher chance for a bad heart. They have higher blood pressure than people who are in a steady relationship. Two other reasons are that skin to skin contact helps to keep blood pressure low and having sex at least two times a week can reduce your chance for getting heart disease by a third. If you don’t have a partner, you can oft for getting regular massages. A massage alleviates stress and reduces the amount of inflammatory substances in your skin.

Go to the gym in the summer

Don’t go running outside if it hasn’t rained for two weeks and there is a thick layer of smog over the city. Finnish researchers discovered that the amount of oxygen is drastically reduced under those circumstances, which in turn increases the chance of a heart attack.

Avoid smokers

You have 26 percent more chance of getting heart disease if you breath in the toxic cigarette fumes. You already have a higher risk if you are exposed to tobacco for half an hour three times per week according to Greek scientists.

Eat more healthy fats

Eat more fats to lower you cholesterol. But choose the right fats, like 17 Australian men did who had high cholesterol levels. They changed their snacking habits and started taking macadamia nuts as their snack. The result was that their cholesterol levels were lowered by 3 to 5 percent, while their ‘good’ HDL-cholesterol levels were raised by almost 8 percent. The reason is that macadamia nuts are full of monounsaturated fats.
