The eating of insects helps against high blood pressure. This is the result of a research done at the University of Gent. The insects contain a protein with the exact same effects as medication against hypertension.
Consuming insects as food is a tradition that is found in Asia, Middle and South America and in Africa. The beetles, ants and termites are very nutritious and a good source of protein, energy and vitamins.
A locust or a caterpillar are rarely found on western menus though, where almost one in three people suffer from high blood pressure.
The insects could be a good alternative to meat, thinks researcher Lieselot Vercruysse of the faculty of bio-engineering at Gent. Insects are better for the environment than meat. They require less water and food to be grown.
