Scientists have discovered that people who have a shortage of vitamin B12 have a six times higher chance of that their brain will shrink.
This correlation was discovered by scientists at the University of Oxford. 107 People between the ages of 61 and 87 were physically examined for this research. They also underwent memory tests and brain scans. Five years later they were examined again. Then it was discovered that people with a vitamin B12 shortage had an increased chance for having a smaller brain.
Especially vegetarians and vegans have to make sure that they consume enough vitamin B12, because vitamin B12 is often found in products that these people do not eat. A shortage of vitamin B12 can also lead to anemia and an infection of the nervous system.
Also the consumption of alcohol leads to the shrinking of the brain. Obesity can lead to brain shrinkage as well. The brains shrinks already from a BMI above 27.
