Vitamin K reduces arteriosclerosis

Vitamin K2 can reduce arteriosclerosis, a chronic disease characterized by hardening and thickening of the arterial walls, by up to 20 percent. Arteriosclerosis is a significant risk factor for dying from cardiovascular diseases.

This is the result of a study done at the University of Utrecht. Scientists examined 564 post menopausal women and investigated if a daily intake of vitamin K1 and K2 had a correlation with the level of arteriosclerosis.

In almost 60 percent of the women arteriosclerosis was found in the coronary artery. A higher intake of vitamin K2 (45 micrograms daily) causes a 20 percent drop in arteriosclerosis compared to a lower intake of vitamin K2 (18 micrograms daily).

There are 2 kinds of vitamin K that are found in foods. Vitamin K1 is primarily found in vegetable oils and green vegetables, like spinach. Vitamin K2 is found in products that have been fermented by bacteria, like cheese, yogurt and curd.
