Lifting weights helps against neck and shoulder pains

Strength training helps to alleviate chronic neck and shoulder pains. These days many people suffer from neck and shoulder pains because of the increased use of computers.

Complaints of the neck and the shoulders stem mostly from one muscle, the trapezius muscle. The trapezius muscle start at the top of the neck till the shoulders and half way down the back. It has the shape of a kite. Specifically training this muscle gives up to 80 percent less pain. General training only gives temporary relief.

In this study almost 50 Danish women, who worked behind the computer all day, were followed. They all had chronic neck and shoulder pains. The women followed different training programs for alleviating their complaints during 10 weeks. Training the trapezius muscle was shown to be the best training program.
