Burning incense daily can increase cancer risk

Burning incense daily can increase the risk of different kinds of cancer in the respiratory system. When someone smokes cigarettes as well, the effect is even worse.

This study proves that the inhaling of incense smoke gives an increased risk for cancer. In the research more than 61000 Chinese who were over 45 years were looked at. About three quarters of the participants burned incense on a daily basis. Subsequently they were followed for 10 years.

Of this group almost 1200 people developed some form of head, neck or lung cancer. It was also shown that the frequency of the usage of incense was a big factor. Participants who also smoked had even a higher chance of developing cancer.

The study was conducted by American and Danish scientists in Singapore. The article will be published in the magazine Cancer.

Incense is made from a blend of materials from plants that are mixed with oils. When these are burned, different kinds of carcinogenic substances are created. When incense fumes are inhaled, these substances find their way into the lungs were they can cause cancer. Non smokers, who sporadically burn incense do not have an increased risk.
