Do not take medication with fruit juice

Taking medicine with a glass of juice can seriously influence the effects of the medication. Canadian researchers therefore warn to only take medication with a glass of water.

Fruit juices often can reduce or increase the working of the medication. Grapefruit (juice) is infamous for its ability to dangerously increase the effects of certain medicines. Now it has been shown that fruit juices can also reduce the effect of certain medications.

The research showed that certain medications against high blood pressure, cancer and some antibiotics were not absorbed properly when they were taken together with grapefruit juice. This is because of naringin, a substance than can reduce the absorption of medications by half. Especially citrus juices contain naringin, but apple juice as well.

That grapefruit juice can increase and decrease the effects of medication is based in two different mechanisms. These two mechanisms do not cancel each other out. That’s why it is sensible to take medications with water.
