The burning of incense is an important part of many religious ceremonies. The rising smoke symbolizes worship, God and it is supposed to be good for the soul. Biologists at the American Johns Hopkins University and the Israeli Hebrew University have now discovered that it is also good for your brain. They looked at the brains of a group of mice that were exposed to incense. The test animals became remarkably calm from the incense according to the researchers.
Their explanation is that the incense that is mostly used in religious ceremonies is made from the resin of the boswellia tree. In it is a substance called incensolacetate. The research has shown that that by burning this substance a part of the brain is activated that influences emotions and the nervous system among others. This is the same part of the brain on which medicines against depression and panic disorder have their effect. The incense had the same calming effect as these medicines.
