Repair diabetes damage with broccoli

Researchers suggest that eating broccoli could be beneficial for diabetics. Sulforaphane, a substance that is found in broccoli, can repair damage to the blood vessels. This is the result of a study done at the University of Warwick.

Diabetics often have damaged blood vessels. This is caused by the high levels of glucose in their blood. A too high level of glucose makes the number of reactive oxygen particles increase significantly.

The researchers investigated the effects of sulforaphane on blood vessels that have been damaged by high glucose levels. This showed that the number of reactive oxygen particles were reduced by 73 percent.

It was also shown that sulforaphane increase the productions of substances that protect the arteries. More research is needed to conclude if a diet rich in cabbage-like vegetables can improve the health of diabetics.
