Running regularly can slow down the aging process and the contraction of diseases that are associated with old age. This is concluded by scientists at the Stanford University Medical Center.
The research showed that elderly that went jogging regularly suffered less from cardiovascular disease and cancer. They were also more mobile and independent. The scientists advice the elderly to keep moving regularly and to get enough exercise.
The researchers followed 500 participant of 50 years and older. They did that for over 20 years. Half of the participants ran or went jogging regularly. The other half did not. Of the group that did not ran one third had died. Of those that did run regularly only 15% had died.
At the begining of the study the active participant ran about 4 hours per week on average. At the end of the study that had dropped to about one hour per week. Still the participants had benefit from the exercise. The researchers think that other kinds of sports probably have the same beneficial effetct.
