A diet low in carbohydrates is more effective than a diet based on calorie restriction. This is the result of a recent study.
Researchers have discovered that people who are overweight lose more weight with a low carb diet than with a calorie restriction diet. A mediterranean diet with lots of vegetables, fibre, white meat and fish is as effective as the Atkins diet (low carb diet).
For the research 322 volunteers were split into 3 groups. One group followed a calorie restricted diet. Another group followed the mediterranean diet and the last group followed a low carb diet, with which they were allowed to eat as many calories as they liked.
People in the first group lost on average 2,3 kilos in 2 years. The people following the mediterranean diet lost 4,5 kilos on average and the low carb group lost 5 kilos on average. 85 Percent of the participants in this study were male. The results could be different for women.
The Atkins diet prescribes a very low carbohydrate (sugars and starch) intake and high amounts of fats and protein. The diet is very controversial. Doctors and dietitians warn for the consequences of diet with a high amount of fat and little carbohydrates.
