Many people think there are 2 kinds of cholesterol. The bad LDL-cholesterol that clogs your arteries and the HDL-cholesterol that cleans your arteries again. Actually there is only one kind of cholesterol. A fatty substance, that doesn’t dissolve in water or blood. To transport cholesterol in the body, it is bound to lipoproteins. And these lipoproteins come in different varieties. Lipoproteins with a low density (Low Density Lipoprotein) and those with a higher density (High Density Lipoprotein). LDL transports cholesterol to all the parts of the body. HDL collects cholesterol and transports it to the liver. The aim is to keep the level of HDL as high as possible and the level of LDL as low as possible. Keep the total cholesterol level below 5 mmol per liter. And keep the ratio between the total amount of cholesterol and the amount of HDL below 5 as well.
Tips for healthy cholesterol levels: Drink a glass of grapefruit juice to lower your LDL. Different studies have shown that with grapefruit juice you can lower your LDL with as much as 15 percent. Or drink orange juice. Three glasses of orange juice per day can increase your HDL with 21 percent. Also walnuts can increase your HDL with 9 percent. And finally a cup of tea can help you decrease your LDL with 11 percent.
