Smoking as well as being overweight can permanently damage your hearing. This is the result of an European study led by the University of Antwerp. Of course the main cause of hearing loss is still noise pollution and too strong sound. But this investigation shows that there is a connection between cardiovascular disease and the hearing.
This is because bad blood circulation can notably reduce hearing. Furthermore damage to hearing is irreversible unlike cardiovascular disease.
All risk factors that apply for cardiovascular disease are therefore also applicable to hearing loss. Also things you can do to prevent cardiovascular disease, like drinking a glass of red wine or getting enough exercise, apply to preventing hearing loss.
In the investigation over 4000 elderly people from seven European countries were asked about their life and eating and drinking habits. Those who smoked a packet of cigarettes from over 10 years, heard about 5 to 10 decibels less at later age. Quit Smoking Now
