Researchers at the Australian Institute of Sport found that caffeine triggers the release of fats into the bloodstream during physical activity, meaning that fat is burned first, reserving stores of carbs for later and enabling you to exercise longer. Even better is that one or two cups of coffee before the gym can reduce post-exercise muscle soreness by up to 60%. Before indulging with coffee though, the study also found that increasing the dose beyond a couple of cups offered no extra benefits.
