Children who consume less salt, drink less soft drinks. This lowers their risk for getting high blood pressure and obesity.
When children between the ages of 4 and 18 would half their salt intake, they would drink two glasses of soda less per week. This equals 250 calories that they would consume less, say British researchers. When children eat less salt, they simple are less thirsty. Per gram of salt it can save a 100 ml daily.
In this study researchers questioned more than 2000 young men in the ages between 4 and 18 years old living in Great Britain. According to dr. Feng He of St. George’s University in London there is a strong link between soft drinks and obesity in young people.
According to the American Heart Association it is recommended not to consume more than 2,3 grams of salt per day. Most of the salt that Americans and Britains consume are in products like tomato sauce, soup, canned foods and ready made meals. Parents should check the labels of the products for their salt content and should remove the salt shaker from the table.
