Folic acid decreases risk of Alzheimer

Alzheimer eBookAmerican researchers followed 965 people which were older than 65 for a period of 6 years. The study looked at the intake of folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 and the influence of that on the chance to get Alzheimer disease. In the end the disease was diagnosed in 192 people of the test group.

After placing the test subjects in four groups divided by the amount of folic acid intake from food and supplements it was shown that those in the group who had the highest folic acid intake had 50% less chance of getting Alzheimer’s than those in the group with the lowest folic acid intake.

The numbers were corrected for the intake of the other 2 vitamins and for age, sex, education level, ethnicity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and the gen the gives a increased risk for Alzheimer’s. For vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 no protective effect for Alzheimer’s was found.
