Coenzyme Q10 can lower blood pressure

Natrol Coenzyme Q10 - 60 capsTwo studies show that ingesting extra amounts of coenzyme Q10 can lower high blood pressure. In the first study performed in the States, 83 people with high blood pressure got 60mg of coenzyme Q10 two times per day or a placebo. After 12 weeks the median systolic blood pressure of the group who got the Q10 had dropped with 17,8 mm. The researchers concluded that coenzyme Q10 is a safe alternative way of treatment for people who suffer from high blood pressure.

In Australia a similar study was undertaken, but this study included only patients with type 2 diabetes who no longer used any insulin and had a low to medium hightened blood pressure (maximum 160mm systolic blood pressure). In the study the workings of coenzyme Q10 was compared to fenofibrate, a cholesterol medication that is not part of the statins group. Here it was also shown that coenzyme Q10 at 200mg per day lowered the blood pressure, unlike fenofibrate which didn’t lower the blood pressure at all. The systolic blood pressure went down 6,1mm on average. Coenzyme Q10 didn’t change cholesterol levels though. Blood sugar levels improved slightly.
