Smoking cannabis can lead to inflammation of the gums or gingivitis. It has been known for a while that smoking often causes problems with the gums. But now it has been shown that smoking cannabis is also bad for your gums.
One out of three cases of gum inflammation can be attributed to the extensive use of cannabis or marijuana. The scientist in New Zealand who conducted the study say this is due to the toxic substances that are inhaled while smoking. This also fits with another recently published study that shows that smoking cannabis gives a higher risk for lung cancer.
All smokers of cannabis also smoked normal cigarettes of which it has been known longer that it can cause gingivitis. But even taking this into account while compiling the results, the chance for gingivitis was three times as high for the smokers of cannabis at age 32. Also smokers of cannabis who didn’t smoke normal cigarettes often also developed inflammation of the gums.
Gingivitis is one of the most common diseases in adults. In the worst cases it leads to tooth decay and even loss of teeth.
