Precut packed lettuce only fresh for 2 days

Precut and packed in bags lettuce often looses it freshness after 2 days. At the best by date the lettuce is already in a terrible state.

The dutch consumer organization claims this after investigating prepacked lettuce. Different kinds of lettuce in various supermarkets were checked for freshness and quality. On the day of purchase the lettuce is of excellent quality in 86% of investigated cases. The quality diminished drasticaly after one day though.

On the day of the best by date only 4 of the 29 bags of lettuce were in a good state. The lettuce had faded and the taste was poor in most cases. More than 59% of the bags were judges as mediocre or bad.

The consumer organization advises not to keep precut lettuce more than two days after purchase. It is also recommended to buy the bag with the latest best by date.
