Drinking four or more cups of full-caffeine coffee a day reduces your risk of dying of heart disease by 53%. That’s what researchers at Brooklyn College discovered when they analyzed a study tracking the caffeine intake of 6500 people for 2 years. However, the finding prompted an important question: Was the effect due to the high amount of caffeine in the coffee or the fact that coffee is packed with disease-fighting antioxidants? The scientists don’t know, but they noted that decaffeinated coffee, soda with caffeine, and antioxidant-rich tea failed to provide the same risk reduction.
Although researchers found that drinking coffee can help keep your heart healthy, the benefits accumulate over time, lowering your heart disease risk in old age.
