To stretch or not to stretch?

Stretch it!There is a new chapter to add to the age long discussion about the benefits (or not) of stretching during warming up. Stretching is supposed to prevent injuries by preparing the muscles and tendons for exercise. Sports Medicine says that the benefit of stretching depends on the kind of sports one is stretching for. Stretching, the researchers say, is especially beneficial for preventing injuries with explosive sports like squash and football. With these sports the muscles and tendons have a hard time so it is a good idea to do some stretching to make them ready for the sports. Less intensive or explosive sports like cycling, swimming and running, put less strain on the muscles, so stretching makes less sense.
