Researchers at the University of New Mexico have discovered that catching some sun could actually help reduce the risk of skin cancer. They found that patients with melanoma (malignant skin cancer) who caught a few rays of sun per day had a 15% better survival rate than those who stayed out of the sun all together. The researchers think that the vitamin D produced by UVB rays when you are in the sun guard against cancer, because vitamin D bolsters your immune system. Up to half an hour in extreme light per day should be enough to boost your intake of vitamin D without increasing your chance for skin cancer.
