Intestinal bacteria determine weight

It’s all in the bellyA publication in Nature Magazine says that being overweight has to do with the bacteria that are present in the intestine. So called ‘firmicutes’ bacteria which can break down nutrients very efficiently, leave more calories to be absorbed by the body. This way the excess energy that the bacteria and you don’t use can be stored in the form of fat. ‘Bacteriodetes’ have the reverse effect. They are less efficient leaving less energy to enter the body. The researchers are now looking for a way to encourage or impede the growth of the different kinds of bacteria.
